Communiversity + a new painting!

Communiversity is this Sunday and I'll have a booth on Nassau Street! If you're in the Princeton area I hope you'll drop by and say hello (although I'm horribly awkward and shy, just a warning) The photo above was taken at Communiversity last year before I chopped off all of my hair and dyed it pink again. It feels like I'm looking at a photo of a totally different person!

Speaking of photos of me -- they've been lacking considerably for the last couple weeks on my style blog, mostly because I've been up to my ears in preparations for this weekend and have rarely been wearing anything other than paint stained pajamas. What I've lacked in style I've made up for in productivity, though. Just yesterday I started and finished seven paintings in the span of 24 hours. (!!!) Six of the seven are new versions of old Puns Intended paintings. I hadn't come up with a brand new one since 2013, but yesterday I finally added a fresh face to my roster of punny paintings:



This falls into the category of "kind of obscure references that will probably never actually sell" but I really love it! It's a scene from Hitchcock's movie Vertigo, but painted in the style of Van Gogh. So, it's Vertigogh. 

Puns Intended used to be my main thing -- from 2005 through 2009 I only did pun paintings. After starting Flapper Doodle in 2009 (and then Sweet and Lovely in 2012) Puns Intended kind of fell by the wayside. As far as my online sales go, it probably makes up like .0001% so I often forget about it or neglect it a bit. But when I do art shows, like Communiversity, I'm reminded of how fun it is to sell funny artwork. I've wanted to do something new since I exhibited last April, and -- I'm obviously someone who works better under pressure -- I finally painted this three days before Communiversity! Phew!

Communiversity

Thank you to everyone who stopped by my booth on Sunday! I completely forgot how much I love doing art shows (especially this one -- Communiversity is THE BEST!) It was just so nice to see customers in person and get to hear people giggling over my pun paintings. I had such a delightful time, the weather was perfect and I parted with quite a few original paintings (I'll miss Leotardo da Vinci the most, I think!) I'm definitely going to consider doing shows more often from now on. I have an incredibly hectic year ahead of me, but once things calm down a bit I might try to make this a regular occurrence again.

Also, it was incredibly exciting to see that I got quoted in the Trenton Times article about Communiversity! The article was in the printed version of the newspaper on 4/27, but here is the snippet from NJ.com.

Upcoming show

I'm putting the finishing touches on my booth for Communiversity on Sunday. If you're in the Princeton, NJ area and want to come visit, my booth will be near Firestone Library on Nassau Street.

I'm bringing pretty much everything that I sell online -- prints, brooches, buttons, collar clips, nostalgia kits, paintings, Christmas cards, etc. The only thing that isn't tagging along is Your Fan Club. I make each button to order, since there are so many to choose from, and I feel like it would be really difficult to guess what buttons would be worth making in advance. With my luck I'd gamble on Bill Murray, make 20 buttons, and then I wouldn't sell a single one at the show and years would pass before anyone would ever buy one online. I'd go to my grave with 20 Bill Murray buttons collecting dust in my basement.

I haven't done any kind of art show in about three years (I think?) and I feel so rusty. I'm just going to try to take it easy and let myself have fun instead of stressing about each little thing. Luckily I still had a lot of stock left over from my previous shows (mostly Puns Intended art prints, since that used to be the only thing I would sell at shows) and my mom has been helping me get all of my new stock ready for Sunday. Hopefully it will be a fun *and please, not rainy* day!
