Communiversity + a new painting!

Communiversity is this Sunday and I'll have a booth on Nassau Street! If you're in the Princeton area I hope you'll drop by and say hello (although I'm horribly awkward and shy, just a warning) The photo above was taken at Communiversity last year before I chopped off all of my hair and dyed it pink again. It feels like I'm looking at a photo of a totally different person!

Speaking of photos of me -- they've been lacking considerably for the last couple weeks on my style blog, mostly because I've been up to my ears in preparations for this weekend and have rarely been wearing anything other than paint stained pajamas. What I've lacked in style I've made up for in productivity, though. Just yesterday I started and finished seven paintings in the span of 24 hours. (!!!) Six of the seven are new versions of old Puns Intended paintings. I hadn't come up with a brand new one since 2013, but yesterday I finally added a fresh face to my roster of punny paintings:

This falls into the category of "kind of obscure references that will probably never actually sell" but I really love it! It's a scene from Hitchcock's movie Vertigo, but painted in the style of Van Gogh. So, it's Vertigogh.

Puns Intended used to be my main thing -- from 2005 through 2009 I only did pun paintings. After starting Flapper Doodle in 2009 (and then Sweet and Lovely in 2012) Puns Intended kind of fell by the wayside. As far as my online sales go, it probably makes up like .0001% so I often forget about it or neglect it a bit. But when I do art shows, like Communiversity, I'm reminded of how fun it is to sell funny artwork. I've wanted to do something new since I exhibited last April, and -- I'm obviously someone who works better under pressure -- I finally painted this three days before Communiversity! Phew!

If you won't be in Princeton this weekend and you're that rare soul who enjoys Hitchcock movies, Van Gogh paintings, and bad puns -- prints are also available in my shop right here.

New brooches & earrings

I just listed some new Puns Intended brooches & Sweet and Lovely earrings in the shop! They're all available under "new" right here.

It's funny, when I get hooked on something I get REALLY hooked on it. When I was little I literally drank nothing but grapefruit juice until I was like 7 or 8, and then I lived on Hershey's chocolate milk boxes until middle school. The same pattern applies to my tv watching habits (I was basically built for binge watching) and, apparently, my art habits as well. Right now I'm clearly in a black-and-white-acrylic-jewelry phase. Almost all of my ideas come in the form of some new jewelry prototype. I'm not complaining, because I really love how all of these turn out and I'm so excited about them! There's something really cool about seeing something you drew on paper turn into a wearable piece of art! That being said, I'm looking forward to the day (hopefully soon) when my brain starts thinking in terms of paintings, drawings and art projects again :)

Puns Intended brooches

I thought it would be fun to make some Puns Intended brooches! This is my first batch, I also have a few more coming up soon (like Poecasso) My favorite one is Bae... every time I hear someone say that word I just want to finish it with "thoven!"

All of the new brooches are available in my shop right here.

New Puns Intended Christmas cards

I designed some new Christmas cards for Puns Intended! Let's just pretend that I'm 11 months early instead of one month late, shall we? These are all available in packs of five in my etsy shop, here. My favorite is mistletoe and Dali... it's embarrassing how much giggling ensued when I came up with that one.

Extra, extra, read all about it!

It's been ages (ages!) since I sent out an update to my Flapper Doodle mailing list, so I've decided to just start a new one instead. I'm pretty sure that anyone who signed up in 2009 would, at this point, scratch their head and wonder where the heck the email came from.

If I *had* sent out a newsletter today, it would have said that I'm offering 30% off at Flapper Doodle with the code "MISTLETOE." Additionally, you'd get (infrequent, I promise!) updates on new products, behind-the-scenes peeks into my studio and work process, exclusive discounts and subscriber-only free downloads. If you're interested in any of that, then you can sign up right HERE.

Puns Intended 2015 calendar

Puns Intended has been my longest-running art series. I started it back in 2005 when I used to do outdoor art shows full-time. I've been meaning to make a calendar out of the paintings for pretty much this entire time -- almost 10 years! And I finally put one together for 2015. I'm thinking of it as a 10 year anniversary celebration.

The calendar includes 12 different punny paintings, printed on vibrant halftone pattern backgrounds. The halftone is a sort of dotted pixel pattern that's only visible when viewed closely, but adds an extra dimension instead of flat color. The pages are 11" x 17" with a small white border around the edge, and they come bound with white plastic comb binding at the top. The calendar is available at Puns Intended right here.

Life of Pi - a Mental Floss exclusive

Mental Floss recently commissioned me to do this six panel painting called "Life of Pi" -- a punny take on the movie and the math. Little Mr. Pi goes through six stages of life -- infancy, teen years, graduation, love & marraige, family, and old age. But as we all know, he doesn't die, he goes on forever ...

The painting is available on prints & t-shirts exclusively in the Mental Floss store.
