New BFF necklaces

New BFF necklace sets in the shop! This is a laser cut set (I'm still smitten with all things laser cut, in case you couldn't tell) that comes with 20" black chains. They're packaged so that you can take your necklace off of the card and give the other half to your friend. I actually really love BFF necklaces that don't make much sense until they're joined together. Like someone looks at it and goes "um, is that half of a face? WHAT IS THAT?" and then you and your bestie lock your pendants together and everything in the world makes sense now.

Anyway, they're available in the shop right here!

New cat brooch design

New little double brooch design, with a cat playing with "string" formed with black chain. I love coming up with jewelry designs that factor the chain into the actual design. This brooch set is available in the shop here.

Orphan Black drawing & more

I've been getting more obsessed with Orphan Black with each passing week so I thought it was about time I channeled that into a flapper doodle drawing, if only because I really wanted to draw Helena's hair. The drawing is available in my shop, here.

If you're a fan of the show I highly recommend listening to the Tatiana is Everyone podcast. I just discovered it about 4 weeks ago and I am so unbelievably hooked. I look forward to it *almost* as much as I look forward to Orphan Black. It's really comprehensive and well researched, and it's also super fun and hilarious. I've been listening to a lot of the old podcasts as well and I just can't get enough!

I also made some new brooches. The drawings aren't new but sometimes I look at an older drawing and think "ooh, that would make a neat brooch!" Especially the one of Barbara Stanwyck from Double Indemnity. The movie is being re-released in theaters in July so I felt like it was necessary that I made some kind of accessory to wear to the screening!

This Time Travel Agent brooch is a 30 Rock tie-in, but I think it works really well as a funny little pin even if you aren't a fan of the show. If you ARE a fan, then you're probably familiar with Frank's rotating trucker hat sayings, which is where this came from.

All of the new brooches are available here.

Finally I decided to make some postcard sets using the postcard designs that I created for my shop promotions this year. I'm eventually going to add some more destinations but for now I have Disney World postcard packs and Seattle postcard packs available here.

I'm really in love with my new flapper emoji drawings, so I decided to also make a couple little button packs featuring the new illustrations! There are two packs available, right here.

Flapper emoji illustration

I'm one of those people who really loves to use emoji and the more I looked at them, the more I kept imagining a set of flapper doodle emoji. So I had to draw them, naturally! You can see my original sketch for the drawing on instagram, here.

I'm so smitten with how this turned out! On instagram someone suggested that I turn them into brooches and I think I might just have to do that with some of my favorites. I'm pretty sure if I made a side-eye flapper doodle emoji brooch I would be wearing it every single day.

Prints of my illustration are available right here.

Illustrations for Lark by Storybird

Storybird just released their new app, Lark. It's a really neat poetry app that allows you to layer poems on top of artwork from the Storybird website. If you're not familiar with Storybird, it's a site where you can use existing artwork from artists around the world to illustrate your own children's books. I have pretty much all of my Flapper Doodle artwork available to use on the website and it's really fun to see how other people have used my drawings in their beautiful stories.

With Lark, you are given the option to choose from various artwork and then you're given an automatically generated selection of words from which to write your poem. You can't add your own words, but I think that's part of the fun! I probably wouldn't have come up with "waltz you magical creatures" on my own, but those were some of the words that were available to me and they fit my drawing perfectly!

One of the reasons that I'm really excited about Lark is that my illustrations were chosen to appear on four of the screens before you start creating your poems and following other awesome users. I love how perfectly the illustrations they chose fit with the page they appear on. When you aren't following any other users yet, my little flapper looks so lonely!

Lark is available to download in the app store, and if you're interested in creating a book you can check out Storybird here.

New Flapper Doodle jewelry

I just added some new Flapper Doodle brooches to the shop! For the longest time I was using a very, very time consuming process to convert my illustrations into laser-cutting files and I just figured out a shortcut that makes it SO much easier. So now I basically want to convert all of my drawings into brooches, haha! For starters, though, I did these five. I really love how the milkshake one turned out, I feel like that'll be a really fun accessory for Valentine's Day next year!

All of the brooches are available in my shop here.

Valentine's Day printable card

As someone who comes up with ideas for Valentine's Day cards a whopping 5 days before Valentine's Day, I can obviously empathize with people who wait until the last minute to prepare for holidays. If you're one of those people and you're finding yourself card-less with February 14th rapidly approaching, fear not!

My new printables are perfect for making a last-ditch attempt at Valentine's Day look like it took way more time than it actually did. You simply print out the cards (they print 4 per 8.5"x11" sheet of paper) cut them out, and then cut slits at the top and bottom of the hand. This gives you a little opening to slide in a lollipop so it looks like the flapper is holding the stick!

These printables are available to download in my shop, here.

Valentine's Day cutoff date

If you'd like your order to arrive by Valentine's Day, my cutoff date is this Friday, Feb. 6th. I ship from New Jersey so if you're on the east coast you could probably squeeze in orders until Monday/Tuesday, but with all of the crazy weather we've been having I'd want to be on the safe side.

My Time Machine to the 90's valentine packs are available here and I also have lots of Valentine's Day cards, and last minute printables at Flapper Doodle here.

The Princess and The Pea

It's been almost a year since my last installment in my Flapper Doodle fairy tale series, but I've sketched out my basic ideas for almost all of the remaining illustrations now, and it's just a matter of fleshing them out & tidying them up! The newest drawing in the series is The Princess and the Pea. I've been smitten with this particular tale for a really long time, mostly because I just really love how mattresses look when they're piled way high. I'm equally smitten with those bedding displays at department stores, with the shortened beds that are stacked super tall with layer upon layer of bedding, but a fairy tale is much more fun to draw.

I was originally going to have wallpaper behind the bed with a subtle pea pod design, but I liked this so much that I decided to just draw the wallpaper on tracing paper and layer it on top, rather than commit to drawing on (and possibly ruining) my illustration. It's one of those instances where an idea seems great until I actually execute it. With the wallpaper it was just too busy, and (even though I still think pea pod wallpaper would have been awesome) I'm really glad I didn't mess around with this drawing.

Anyway -- the original is available in my store, here, as well as prints, here.

Extra, extra, read all about it!

It's been ages (ages!) since I sent out an update to my Flapper Doodle mailing list, so I've decided to just start a new one instead. I'm pretty sure that anyone who signed up in 2009 would, at this point, scratch their head and wonder where the heck the email came from.

If I *had* sent out a newsletter today, it would have said that I'm offering 30% off at Flapper Doodle with the code "MISTLETOE." Additionally, you'd get (infrequent, I promise!) updates on new products, behind-the-scenes peeks into my studio and work process, exclusive discounts and subscriber-only free downloads. If you're interested in any of that, then you can sign up right HERE.

Printable Christmas countdown

It's almost time to start counting the days until Christmas! Yay! I've had this on my to-do list for months, but didn't get around to starting it until this week. I should really pay more attention to calendars myself, I always seem to release my seasonal products on Thanksgiving or Black Friday when common wisdom says they should be out in July or August. oops!

If you could use some help keeping track of the passing days, and/or if you're as excited about Christmas as I am and can't wait 'til the big day arrives, my advent calendar is available in my shop here. It's a printable PDF so the file will be available to download immediately after checkout.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Christmas ornaments

I can't believe this is Flapper Doodle's sixth Christmas season (time flies!) and that it took me this long to finally make ornaments. I chose to make a few ornaments from my favorite Christmas card designs, as well as a custom one for couples spending their first holiday season together! I may even live up to my cat-lady-ness and offer a First Christmas ornament for a girl and her kitty... hmm..

The Flapper Doodle ornaments are all available in my etsy shop, here. My hand-painted Dwight Christmas ornament is available at Sweet and Lovely, here.

ps. Stay tuned, I just finished over 30 new Your Fan Club pins and they'll be up for sale later this week!

Flapper Doodle holiday gift guide

It's almost time to start Christmas shopping and picking out holiday cards, so I thought I'd help things along with this Flapper Doodle Gift Guide! All of the items link back to their respective etsy listings, which makes browsing my shop for holiday goodies a lot easier than sifting through 10+ pages. And everything is broken down into categories -- gifts for your BFF, gifts for cat lovers, even gifts for yourself (I mean, why not?)

You can take a peek at the gift guide right here, and be sure to bookmark it for Black Friday so you can come back and use the 30% off code on the site! :)

Flapper Doodle best friend pendants

Speaking of giving old products new facelifts, my BFF pendants have received a small update as well. In 2012 I stocked up a little too much and ended up with enough pendant supplies to last me for two years. When it came time to (finally!) reorder I decided to switch to these trays instead. They're sturdier than the ones I had been using, and feel much more substantial. The new pendants are available in my Flapper Doodle shop here.

Changing pendant trays also meant taking new photos, and it was about time. I'm slowly starting to re-photograph a lot of my products with this new warm grey textured background. I think it really makes the items stand out much better than a plain white background, or the brown floral one I had been using before.

Here is a timeline of the BFF pendants, starting with my first set that was made by gluing my prints to scrabble tiles. I'd say they've definitely improved since then!

Flapper Doodle Christmas brooches

Three new brooch designs in the shop, all perfect for the upcoming holiday season! They're available at Flapper Doodle, here.
