Dinosaurs eat man... woman inherits the earth

I'm sure it's already pretty obvious that I'm a huge fan of Jurassic Park. One of my favorite things about the original movie is that the heroine, Ellie Sattler (played by Laura Dern) is a super smart and tough paleobotanist who doesn't need saving when dinosaurs are on the loose. She's the one who uttered the famous line "dinosaurs eat man... woman inherits the earth." And when one of the men suggests that he should be the one to risk his life towards the end of the film she says "we'll discuss sexism in survival situations when I get back," then dashes off to save everyone.

So, if you've seen or heard anything about the new Jurassic World movie, you can probably guess that I'm one of the people who wasn't too thrilled with the treatment of the female lead this time around. You can google "Jurassic World sexist" -- there are so many articles on the subject that I don't really have to add to it. But suffice to say, I think that it was a huge step down from Ellie Sattler.

I did really enjoy Jurassic World, and I'm going to see it again, but it was hard to fully enjoy it when shadows of Ellie Sattler were dancing through my mind. I couldn't help but wonder, how do you go from a female lead who ridicules gender stereotypes in adventure movies to a female lead who is the embodiment of a gender stereotype in an adventure movie?

All that being said, after seeing the new movie I felt a surge of Ellie Sattler appreciation bubbling up inside of me and it had to come out in drawing form. This is currently available as an art print in my shop here, and it'll be available in brooch form next week!

New BFF necklaces

New BFF necklace sets in the shop! This is a laser cut set (I'm still smitten with all things laser cut, in case you couldn't tell) that comes with 20" black chains. They're packaged so that you can take your necklace off of the card and give the other half to your friend. I actually really love BFF necklaces that don't make much sense until they're joined together. Like someone looks at it and goes "um, is that half of a face? WHAT IS THAT?" and then you and your bestie lock your pendants together and everything in the world makes sense now.

Anyway, they're available in the shop right here!

Art print bundles

I've been offering bundle deals for my art prints since I started selling on etsy in 2009, but to be honest I completely forgot about them when I designed my new website. Oops!! It didn't occur to me until today when I sold a puns intended print set on etsy and I realized I needed to get on the ball. So now all of my existing print deals (plus two new ones!) are available in my shop. The great thing about these deals is that you can mix and match from my different styles, like you could get 2 flapper doodle prints and 2 puns intended in one bundle deal.

AND no coupon code is necessary to get the discount so you can feel free to add an additional code on top of the reduced print packs. AND all US orders over $25 (and International orders over $120) ship free ... just saying ;)

You can access all of the different discounted print bundles right here.

New cat brooch design

New little double brooch design, with a cat playing with "string" formed with black chain. I love coming up with jewelry designs that factor the chain into the actual design. This brooch set is available in the shop here.

Jurassic Park brooches!

New Jurassic Park themed brooches in the shop, just in time for Jurassic World :D I'm SO excited about the new movie. I love the original but I also love Chris Pratt, so I think it should make for a pretty awesome combination. The brooches are available here and some of the designs are also available as art prints as well!

If you're on the east coast and place your order tonight it *should* arrive in time for the Jurassic World premiere (assuming USPS delivers within their estimated delivery times) if you want to wear one of the brooches to the movies.

Orphan Black drawing & more

I've been getting more obsessed with Orphan Black with each passing week so I thought it was about time I channeled that into a flapper doodle drawing, if only because I really wanted to draw Helena's hair. The drawing is available in my shop, here.

If you're a fan of the show I highly recommend listening to the Tatiana is Everyone podcast. I just discovered it about 4 weeks ago and I am so unbelievably hooked. I look forward to it *almost* as much as I look forward to Orphan Black. It's really comprehensive and well researched, and it's also super fun and hilarious. I've been listening to a lot of the old podcasts as well and I just can't get enough!

I also made some new brooches. The drawings aren't new but sometimes I look at an older drawing and think "ooh, that would make a neat brooch!" Especially the one of Barbara Stanwyck from Double Indemnity. The movie is being re-released in theaters in July so I felt like it was necessary that I made some kind of accessory to wear to the screening!

This Time Travel Agent brooch is a 30 Rock tie-in, but I think it works really well as a funny little pin even if you aren't a fan of the show. If you ARE a fan, then you're probably familiar with Frank's rotating trucker hat sayings, which is where this came from.

All of the new brooches are available here.

Finally I decided to make some postcard sets using the postcard designs that I created for my shop promotions this year. I'm eventually going to add some more destinations but for now I have Disney World postcard packs and Seattle postcard packs available here.
